Meet 18-year-old Lawrence “Cole,” a remarkable young man whose strength and spirit shine brighter than any challenge he faces. At just 13 years old, Cole was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C, a rare and progressive disorder. Though he can’t walk long distances due to fatigue that can lead to seizures, Cole never lets that stop him from living life to the fullest.
Despite the hurdles, Cole’s joy is contagious. He’s a huge sports fan with a big heart and an even bigger smile. One of his favorite places to be is at Hooters, enjoying wings while cheering on his beloved Rays and Bucks—sometimes all at once! He’s also a math whiz in the classroom, with a natural gift for numbers and a love for learning.
But above all, Cole’s greatest love is his dog, Briar, who never leaves his side. To his mom, he is her entire world. To those who know him, Cole is the life of the party—outgoing, kind, and endlessly inspiring. His positive attitude and unbreakable spirit remind us every day how powerful a hopeful heart can be.
Thanks to the generosity of the Mabel and Ellsworth Simmons Charitable Foundation, Cole has received the manual wheelchair he needed to safely get around on days when he’s feeling weak or at risk of seizures.
This gift provides Cole with the freedom and independence to continue doing the things he loves—surrounded by the people and places that bring him the most joy.
